Wayne Bridge

Wayne Bridge is a left back who plays for English side West Ham, on loan from Manchester City. He has also won 36 caps for England. Bridge came up through the ranks at Southampton, where he made an outstanding contribution for several seasons before signing for Chelsea in July 2003. After two seasons at Chelsea he struggled after an injury to stay amongst the starters in a strengthened squad. In January 2006 he went on loan to Fulham, where more playtime helped him secure a spot in England’s 2006 FIFA World Championship squad. He went back to Chelsea again for the following season. His playtime was still limited, now mainly because of fellow England international Ashley Cole. In January 2009 Bridge signed for Manchester City and the following month he resigned from further England duties. This is thought to have been because of an alleged affair between England/Chelsea captain John Terry and Bridge’s ex-girlfriend.

At 18 he signed for English club Blackburn, who at the time had England international Tim Flowers as their first choice. Shay Given was sent on loan first to Swindon, then to Sunderland. Kenny Dalglish, newly appointed manager of Newcastle United noticed Given at play for Sunderland and made him one of his first signings. Given grabbed the chance and quickly established himself at Newcastle. His performances at Swindon and Sunderland had also already resulted in him being called up for the Irish national team. In April 2010 Given dislocated his shoulder in a match which excluded him for the rest of the season. At the start of the 2010/11 season Joe Hart, back from a loan to Birmingham, was chosen ahead of Given as City’s first choice. Joe Hart has consistenty played well and is also England’s first choice goalkeeper. Roberto Mancini further announced that Shay Given may leave the club if he wished to do so.
