Sir Alex Ferguson is the manager of English side Manchester United, a post he has held since 1986.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland he spent his playing career with various Scottish clubs up through the 1960s/70s. Ferguson’s career as a manager started with a brief stint at East Stirlingshire, at the early age of 32. He then managed St Mirren between 1974-1978 before joining Aberdeen.
At Aberdeen Ferguson gradually turned an underachieving, but well-established club, into winning the Scottish Premier Division for the first time in 25 years. The club went on to have their most successful period with a further two league titles, 4 Scottish Cups, 1 League Cup and the 1983 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. After this several clubs were chasing Ferguson, including Rangers (one of the clubs he had played for), Tottenham and Arsenal. He rejected all of them. With the sudden death of Scotland coach, Jock Stein, Ferguson took the caretaker position leading the national team in 1985-86 including the 1986 FIFA World Cup. In November 1986 he left Aberdeen and Scotland for the top post at Manchester United.
Again Ferguson was at the helm of an underperforming team, where fans expectations and demands weren’t met. What he in 24 years has achieved at the club is history and Ferguson is the most successful football coach in history. Amongst United’s long list of triumphs under Alex Ferguson are 11 Premier League titles (after 26 years since the last league title), 5 FA Cups, 4 League Cups, 1 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and 2 UEFA Champions League titles. In fact the 1998-99 season saw them winning the treble (Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League). There have been a lot of speculation about when he might retire and who would be to replace him. However in his 25th season in charge of United he still appears to be at the top of the game. Ferguson also wrote a very interesting autobiography, which makes an insightful read into the great man at work.
