Kenny Dalglish

June 20th, 2011 by CarloS

Kenny Dalglish is a former striker and current manager of English side Liverpool. He was born and grew up in Glasgow, Scotland, and came up through the ranks of Celtic. He won several titles with Celtic. He played in three World Cups for Scotland and has the national record of appearances and goals scored.
In 1977 he was brought to Liverpool to replace Kevin Keegan. He was given Keegan’s famous no.7 shirt and quickly settled in to become a firm favourite with The Kop. After having won 5 league titles, 3 European cups and 4 League Cups, Dalglish became player-manager ahead of the 1985/86 season. That season Liverpool won the double. He guided the club to another two league titles and another FA Cup before resigning in February 1991.
Dalglish’s retirement was short-lived and he was appointed manager for second division side Blackburn in October 1991. He led the club to promotion to the Premier League already that season. In the first season in the Premier League Blackburn came 4th, the following season 2nd before winning the title in the 1994/95 season. The following season his position changed from manager to Director of Football and at the end of the season he left Blackburn all together.

In January 1997 Dalglish replaced Kevin Keegan for the second time of his career. This time as manager of Newcastle United. Keegan had helped Newcastle to promotion from the second tier to the first tier of English football, first as a player in the early 1980s, then came back and also did it as a manager in the early 1990s. Dalglish finished the 1996/97 season with Newcastle being runners-up in the Premier League and qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. The 1997/98 campaign was less successful and Newcastle finished 13th. The 1998/99 season had barely started when Dalglish was sacked from his position.
The following season Dalglish was back in Scotland, as Director of Football at his old club Celtic. He had recommended ex-Liverpool player John Barnes as manager. Barnes was eventually sacked in February 2000 and Dalglish took over as caretaker manager. He guided them to finish the season with the Scottish League Cup title. Shortly after Celtic terminated his contract with the club.

Ahead of the 2009/10 season Kenny Dalglish was brought back to Liverpool to contribute with the youth development and as an ambassador of the club. Manager Rafael Benítez left the club one year later and was replaced by Roy Hodgson. A disastrous start to the 2010/11 season had Hodgson quickly falling out of favour with the Liverpool supporters and a growing desire to let Dalglish take over. Hodgson did eventually leave the club in January and Dalglish was appointed caretaker manager. Things slowly started to turn around for the better and the club started climbing again. They finished the season in 6th place. Dalglish was given a permanent three year deal in May. Almost twenty years after he left the same position, Daglish is again a firm favourite with the Liverpool fans as he is rebuilding the club.

Luis Suárez

February 12th, 2011 by FrankO

Luis Suárez is a striker who plays for English side Liverpool and the Uruguayan national team.
Suárez arrived at Liverpool in the turmoils of Fernando Torres leaving the club for Chelsea. Liverpool responded by also bringing Andy Carroll to Anfield, in addition to Suárez. Manager Kenny Dalglish gave Carroll Torres’ number 9 shirt, while he bestowed Suárez the honour of Liverpool’s famous number 7 shirt. Some of Liverpool’s greatest players, like Kevin Keegan, Dalglish himself, John Aldridge, Peter Beardsley and Steve McManaman have all worn it.

Suárez came up through the ranks at Nacional in Uruguay. He played the 2005-06 season in the first team, where he contributed to Nacional winning the Primera Division. At the end of the season, aged 19, he moved to the Netherlands to play for FC Groningen. He was instantly noticed by bigger clubs and in August 2007 he transferred to Ajax for €7.5 million. He also made his debut for Uruguay while playing for Groningen. Suárez was also an instant success at Ajax, scoring 20 goals in his first season. He was initially a supporting striker to Klaas Jan Huntelaar and later Mounir El Hamdaoui and had a major impact with several assists in addition to his own goals. In 2009 new manager Martin Jol made Suárez the captain of the team. In 2010 he was named Footballer of the Year in the Netherlands, following a season where he was also the Eredivisie top scorer. After the transfer to Liverpool, Suárez came off the bench in his debut in a 2-0 win against Stoke, scoring the second goal to make him an instant favourite also with The Kop.

Suárez has also been surrounded by some controversy in his career. In his second season with Ajax he received numerous yellow cards and in November 2010 he was suspended after having bitten a PSV Eindhoven player. Most notorious though was his handling of the ball on the line in the 2010 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal, where he blocked a shot from Ghana in the last minute of extra time. Ghana missed the penalty and subsequently Uruguay went on to win the penalty shoot-out for a place in the semifinal. Suárez was together with Diego Forlán the two with the biggest impact on Uruguay’s strong run in the World Cup. They scored three and five goals respectively at the tournament.

Liverpool gain Suarez but set to lose Torres

January 29th, 2011 by CarloS

BREAKING NEWS:
Ajax and Liverpool have agreed on a €26.5 million move for Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez. That’s the good news. The shocking news from Anfield Road is that their Spanish star striker Fernando Torres is demanding that he be sold to Chelsea!

Torres feels a move away from Liverpool now is right for his career. Liverpool could make more than a £20m profit if they accept Chelsea’s bid. Should the deal go through, Torres will also be eligible to play in the Champions League for Chelsea. It’s only three days until this transfer window closes.

Liverpool in crisis

October 5th, 2010 by FrankO

It’s not easy being a football supporter in Liverpool these days. Both premiership teams have found themselves struggling near the bottom after the first seven matches. For the fans of Liverpool F.C. this is a far cry from the anticipations ahead of this season. The club managed to keep their two greatest assets, captain Steven Gerrard and spaniard Fernando Torres, as well as bringing in some new players like Joe Cole. The choice of Roy Hodgson as new manager was also met with optimism for a team aiming at qualifying for Champions League.

The Kop at Anfield are already calling for Hodgson to go, though that seems a bit premature yet. From my point of view Liverpool should have called on their legend Kenny Dalglish when Rafa Benitez left for Internazionale. Kenny Dalglish was a player at the club (1977-1989) during their most successful period and player-manager until he left in 1991. In 2009 he came back to the club as a club ambassador and head of development. Roy Hodgson will probably have the club’s backing until Christmas to turn things around. Should he not succeed we could see Dalglish take over as caretaker-manager at least for the remaining of the season.

Joe Cole

Joe Cole Liverpool

Joe Cole was Roy Hodgson’s first signing after taking charge at Liverpool F.C. He arrived on a free transfer from Chelsea and is one of the players Liverpool is counting on to improve a disappointing start to the 2010/11 season. On October 4th he has also been recalled to the England squad, for their Euro2012 qualifier against Montenegro.
